What is A Hard Drive?
In simple words, a hard drive is a data storage device. The data saved in the hard drive as files and folders is physically present there on the hard drive. Hard drive is now synonymous to the hard disk, which implies that there are actual disks that are housed together in a casing, which stores the data.
Generally, a hard drive is now a lot smaller as compared to its size in the past. In addition, there are other data storage devices available, which are as small as a microchip but can have huge capacity for data storage. A typical hard drive is approximately the size of your hand, yet it can hold over terabytes of data. There are also solid-state storage devices, which are a lot smaller as compared to the hard drives but provide ample storage space. A typical hard disk has a disk to store the data. These disks spin extremely fast making the data quickly available in the moment of a click. The data once stored on a hard drive remains there even the computer is turned on. This also applies to all modern data storage devices.
You can make various partitions in a single hard drive to save a specific kind of data in a single partition. For example, people usually install their windows operating system in “C” partition of the hard drive while keeping partitions like “D” and “E” and so on for their own choice of files. The partition also provides the ease to completely remove all files from a partition by completely formatting that partition while keeping the data unharmed which is stored in the other partitions.
Many users prefer to have more than one storage device in their computers to increase their storage capacity. Some use more than one hard drive while some prefer using a solid-state memory drive in combination with the hard drive. Almost all desktop computers and laptops have the capacity to increase the memory storage of the machine by allowing the installation of one or more data storage devices.
How to Detect A Hard Drive:
If you do not know how many hard drives are actually installed in your computer or you just have increased the data storage capacity of your computer but not seeing the newly installed memory drive on your computer. The issue of not seeing all the hard drives arises in few of the new computers with Windows 10 because the partitions may not be properly set-upped with the new installation of the windows. In such a case, you know your computer has a lot more data storage capacity than what you are seeing then you can detect it by following the below stated easy steps.
STEP # 1:
Right click on the windows button in the bottom left corner of your computer and choose “Disk Management” by clicking on it.
STEP # 2:
A new window will pop-up where you can see the hard drives installed in your computer. It also has the information of how much disk space your computer has and out of that, how much storage is allocated to different partitions.
In the picture above, it can be seen that the computer has only one storage device and suitable disk space has been allocated into different partitions. That means no additional hard drive or partition is there which is undetected by the system and that there is nothing to worry about. The blue color indicates the primary partition while the red color tab indicates that unallocated disk space. Here, there is no black portion meaning that all disk space is allocated.
STEP # 3:
On the other hand, if you are sure that there is unallocated or unpartitioned space available in your computer, it should show the unpartitioned space as shown in the below picture.
As you can see, a new hard drive or unallocated space is detected which is shown in black highlight which you can now allocate to your computer. For that, you need to right click on the unallocated disk and complete the simple steps like naming your new disk and the file type you want the new disk to have. After you are done with adding the new disk into your computer, it will show up in the “My PC” window as a hard disk drive.
Conclusion: It is very easy to detect a hard drive or unallocated space in your computer so that you might be able to utilize them and increase your computer’s storage capacity. All you need to do is to follow the above stated easy steps.
